Frutiger Font Overview
Frutiger Font forms are designed so that each individual character is quickly and easily recognized. Such distinctness makes it good for signage and display work.
In 1968, Adrian Frutiger was asked to make a sign and directional system for the newly built Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Though everyone thought he would want to use his successful Univers font family, Frutiger decided instead to make a new sans serif typeface that would be suitable for the specific legibility requirements of airport signage: you can see them clearly from any distance or angle of driving and walking. Consequently, the typeface was consistent with the contemporary architecture of the airport.
In 1976, he extended and completed the series under D. Stempel AG together with Linotype, which was called Frutiger.
To prevent it from being strictly geometric or humanistic, the Frutiger™ family’s forms are constructed so that each of the characters can be identified with no hesitation or error. Such uniqueness must be considered for signs and displays. To begin with, the original design was aimed at the vast expanse of an airport; however, today, this font displays a charm and subtlety that makes it popular for smaller settings of body text, such as magazines and booklets.
The family has 14 regular weights and 14 companion fonts containing Central European characters and diacriticals. There are also 14 companion fonts in Cyrillic.
Frutiger Font Usage
Further to this, Frutiger font that has been used throughout Charles de Gaulle airport is also brand identity of brands such as British Royal Navy, Telefónica O2, DHL and Raytheon. Those who travel around California’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system may remember Frutiger being used on signage and route maps.
The improved and re-released Frutiger exists on today’s market after it was first unveiled in 1976. Changed versions include Frutiger Next, Frutiger Arabic, Neue Frutiger, and Frutiger Greek versions.
